The Butterfly and The Bee

A Story of Rebirth

What was that sound? There is was again--tinkling chimes. Soothing, joyous, light filled sound ringing out in the cool spring air. Her first sound she ever created! To anyone listening they would know right away it was indeed the sound of laughter! Laughter full of magic. Peeking a small brown eye open, the wrinkled bright green caterpillar nibbled through the shiny egg. Her face crinkles as she opens her minuet mouth and out in spring wind floats whispers of twinkling little chimes of merry laughter. Anyone who had heard this beautiful sound would instantly feel a cloak of light, soft and comforting, wrapping around them. What a delight! True joy!

Nearby a bee waits and watches as the caterpillar eats the last of its egg emerging into the wondrous world. The bee didn't realize at this moment how the tiny little wrinkled caterpillar would become the greatest teacher. No, it only felt pure joy watching this small life begin to explore the delights of its environment.

Each day the bee danced to the caterpillars home so it might catch a glimpse of this new being filled with light, and a unique light indeed. One day, the bee dances over to the caterpillar, hugs her and introduces herself.

"I'm so happy you're here! I've been waiting for you," the bee buzzed with delight. At that instant, the bee and caterpillar were the best of friends. So best were they, many called them spirit family. Yes, indeed, they fit together like Hershey chocolate and wrapper. In fact, their favorite food they discovered was not pollen or leaves. It was chocolate! Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal would bring them bits of chocolate when bee and caterpillar played around their nest.

Sweet spring turning to long warm summer days brings laughter and many new adventures for bee and caterpillar. Treasures they find, mysteries they solve, dancing they do as they sing--so many new things bee tucks inside her heart so she might bring out on those rainy days.

Seasons turn as summer shifts into Autumn. Bee and caterpillar grow each in their own way, each blossom and share and laugh. Together bee and caterpillar watch the red, gold, purple, orange leaves swirl to the ground. They smell the warming smoke from bonfires and peat fires. Still laughing, they find new adventures in the new seasons. They delight in hiding and seeking; rolling down hills; buzzing and crawling through tree houses near The Cardinals nest.

After Autumn, Winter arrives with snow and ice. Bee and caterpillar make snowmen, snow angels, eat snow ice, ride sleds laughing all the while!

Spring begins to blossom once more, the bee makes her dance towards the caterpillar but along the way hears whispers that the caterpillar cannot play as she's in her cocoon. The bee waits and waits. Many weeks go by until one day the bees sees something emerging from the cocoon. Luminous wings stretch from the graceful back of a most magnificent butterfly. Wise eyes look at the bee. Gazing at the butterfly's beauty, a small tear slides down the bee's furry cheek. Smiling, the butterfly's melodious lilt floats around the bee wrapping her like a hug.

The friends eyes meet. A knowing, an understanding. A goodbye--for now.

And with that the glorious butterfly spreads her shimmering wings and flies up to the Celestial Realm.

The bee watches her friend until she can no longer see her. Turning to go, she catches sight of Mrs. Cardinal, who tilts her head and leaps into the air to catch up with the butterfly.

The bee remembers then, all of the happy memories she has tucked inside her heart. Of those, Love is the gift.
